Parents as teachers
At EdisonLearning we believe parents are not only their child’s
first teacher, but their most influential teacher. We are
committed to supporting parents with ideas that promote appropriate
family learning.
We understand that children of all ages are curious and want to
learn new things. For parents, that means the opportunities for
learning in their home and in their community are endless.
Parents need not be trained teachers to make a huge difference
in their child’s education. Having fun and taking advantage of the
time spent as a family makes learning a part of daily life and
helps children see the value in all they are learning in
school.
Not just homework help
Often, when parents think about teaching their child, homework
comes to mind. Helping a child develop good study habits and
completing their home assignments is certainly important. Children
learn organizational skills and time management from their daily
home assignments.
But for parents, learning with their child can be
incredibly rewarding and fun. If parents are shopping for
groceries, or building something, or cooking, or working around the
house, their child can be included as both a worker and a learner.
Learning outside school helps kids, too – when parents help their
children see how reading and math are used in daily life, children
will discover how important school really is.
Our Parent Connection newsletters – Parent Connection Reading and Parent Connection Math – can help you find out more
about the valuable kind of learning that takes place between parent
and child outside of school.
