Corporate history

A tradition of growth and improvement

In 1992, The Edison Project was launched as an ambitious research and development effort. It aimed to draw on all available scientific research on student learning and school success to create a new and innovative model of public schooling, capable of providing a world-class education to every child. The Edison Project provided the foundation for all of the subsequent work of Edison Schools, Inc., which opened its first schools in 1995.

From the whole school solutions of EdisonLearning™ School Designs to the school improvement partnerships of EdisonLearning Alliance™ schools and beyond, the organization has continued to innovate. These “Education Innovations” are built on the company’s original foundation, and on its practical, first-hand experience in elevating student achievement at schools across the country, often serving highly disadvantaged populations.

Transforming for the future

In 2008, a major company transformation took place with the announcement of EdisonLearning, which represents an important next step to ensure that the organization continues its powerful legacy and proud tradition of educational leadership.

With the acquisition of the education software company Provost Systems, EdisonLearning combines its experience and core competencies in teaching and learning with a fully integrated online and Web-based technology solution that can dramatically achieve universal student access to a genuine, individualized learning experience. The K-12 opportunities lying at the intersection of traditional schooling and online learning are incredible and exciting.

Today, EdisonLearning is fulfilling our promise of achievement – to be the preeminent partner in providing innovative achievement management solutions that deliver superior learning outcomes for all children.
